Our Mission

The mission of Adult Literacy Connections is to promote and improve the literacy of adults in Floyd County. We believe that the ability to read is critical to personal freedom and self-sufficiency.

Literacy includes:

  • The ability to read
  • The knowledge and skills to use documents such as job applications, payroll forms, or product labels
  • The ability to use numbers for daily tasks such as completing an order form or balancing a checkbook

We provide:

  • One-on-one instruction in reading, writing, and math for adults 18 and older
  • Individualized lesson plans
  • Skilled, caring tutors
  • Materials and workbooks
  • Confidentiality
  • Hope and success

The need:

  • 13% of Floyd County residents 18-24 years old have not graduated from high school
  • 11.7% of Floyd County residents 25 years and older do not have a high school diploma
  • 28.6% of Floyd County residents 25 years and older without a high school diploma are living in poverty
  • Median earning in Floyd County without a high school diploma are $16,635

Tutor requirements:

  • Adults 21 and older
  • Completion of 12 hours of training
  • One year commitment
  • Application and interview
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Available 2 hours per week
  • Flexibility and desire to help
  • Compassion
  • Willingness to tutor in math is highly desirable
